Meteorologist Charlie Lopresti Visits
Great Fall School!

On March 23, meteorologist Charlie Lopresti from Channel 13 came to talk to the second grade classes. We have all been studying weather and Mr. Lopresti had a lot of great information to share and really cool things to show us. Mr. Lopresti taught us about what meteorologists do and about the many different kinds of weather we have in Maine!

What did you learn from Charlie Lopresti?

Meteorology is the study of weather. It is not the study of meteors

"Meteorologists predict the weather. Boaters, fishermen, farmers, and baseball players all depend on knowing the weather."
                                           Colby

"Meteorologists use radar, computers, and satellites to get weather information."
                                              Logan

"Meteorologists stand in front of a plain green screen when they are doing the weather report on T.V. It is not really a map.
                                            Quinn

Mr. Lopresti is holding a weather balloon that has already been used.

"Meteorologists send up weather balloons to gather data about the weather."
                                         Ava

"Hurricanes have a lot of rain and strong winds. The winds can push a tree over."
                                          Jacob

"Floods can be really bad where there is a lot of pavement. Scientists are working on inventing special pavement that can suck up water."
                                           Behar

"Blizzards have a lot of snow and high winds."
                                              Jasmine

"Ice storms can do a lot of damage to trees and power lines. Maine had a very bad ice storm in 1998."
                                           Grace

"The speed of light is faster than the speed of sound so you see the lightning before you hear the thunder."
                                                Luke Br.

"Lightning is always trying to find its way to the ground."
                                        Ben

Lightning strikes the tallest thing around. Don't go under a tree when it is lightning.
                                       Cam
"When thunder roars,
Go indoors!"
                                             Maddie

"Static electricity makes a flash that can give you a shock. Lightning is electricity"
                                             Ruby

"Static electricity can make your hair stand up."
                                            Bella

Luke is about to have a shocking experience.

Yup! Shocking!

"Spinning tornadoes can pick up dirt and other objects. We have had tornadoes in Gorham."
                                             Gracie

"Once a tornado pulled up a tree by its roots. A little while later another tornado, coming from the opposite direction pushed it back into its hole."
                                             Grayson

"Tornadoes can break down brick walls."
                                              Lauren

"Funnel clouds don't always touch the ground. If it doesn't touch the ground, it's not a tornado."
                                                Johnny

"When a meteorologist tells you that a tornado is coming, go in the basement or the lowest level of the house.
Don't go out and take pictures."
                                                 Luke Bo.
